Recovering Addicts Form 'Hands Across the Bridge'
About 1,400 individuals recovering from alcohol and other drug addiction took part in the third annual Hands Across The Bridge event, forming a human chain over the Columbia River in Oregon to celebrate the accomplishment of staying sober, the Oregonian reported Sept. 7.
The celebration kicked off National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month in the Portland area.
Hands Across The Bridge marked a personal milestone for former drug users who celebrated the transformations they made in their lives.
"The lifestyle I used to live, I got tired of it," said Leo Etherly, 25, who started misusing alcohol and cocaine as a child and two years ago served a jail sentence for domestic violence.
