Addiction to painkillers and other prescription drugs is quickly becoming one of the greatest substance abuse problems across the country. However, a new report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration indicates that the problem is particularly bad in the Northeast.

The Boston Herald reports that the newly released figures from the administration indicate that Maine and Vermont rank number one and two respectively in terms of prescription painkiller addiction rates.

The study based its findings on the number of individuals who sought substance abuse help for painkiller addiction between 1998 and 2008.

While Maine and Vermont were found to have the highest rates of abuse, the report indicates that painkiller misuse is growing at a rapid rate in all corners of the country, according to the Associated Press. Oxycodone was the most commonly abused prescription drug.

Prescription medications recently became the second most commonly abused drugs, behind only marijuana, according to the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The office reports that teens and young adults are the most frequent abusers.
