Popular club drug may benefit individuals with antisocial personality disorder

MDMA, more commonly known as the club drug ecstasy, can cause harmful side effects and lead to dangerous addiction problems that require substance abuse help. However, when it is administered under close doctor supervision, it may have many benefits for individuals with antisocial personality disorder, as well as other psychological disturbances.
The drug is known to increase feelings of empathy and social connectedness. These are some of the reasons why it became popular in party settings. However, there have been few studies to test if these behavioral changes may benefit patients with certain psychological conditions.
Now, a team of researchers from the University of Chicago has found that MDMA may have a number benefits in the treatment of psychological disorders. Investigators found that, when administered under tightly controlled circumstances, it can friendliness, playfulness and loving feelings.
While these benefits may lead to improved treatments for individuals with antisocial disorder, autism and schizophrenia, researchers said that more studies need to be conducted to determine exactly how the drug should be administered.
