Rehab facilities can help addicts recover from chemical dependency, but drug abusers are often reluctant to go for treatment. Families can have a difficult time getting addicted members to seek treatment. However, laws in some states may make it easier for families to provide the help that their loved ones need.

For example, the Marchman Act in Florida allows relatives of drug addicts to get a court order from a judge that compels the drug abuser to seek treatment. Drug rehab workers in the state told Orlando Sentinel that many families will use this provision as a last resort when addicts have been resistant to all their other efforts.

Experts said that more than 200 applications for judges' orders had been submitted in 2010, which is a 20 percent increase from the previous year. They said that a high percentage of these applications are granted.

Opiate addiction is one of the most difficult habits to overcome. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that 18 percent of all rehab admissions are for addiction to heroin or other opiates.
