The growth in internet access had made a large number of online gambling services available. This has created a major problem for college-age students. A new report has found that they are significantly more likely than the general population to develop an addiction to these games that requires help from rehab facilities to eliminate.

The report, which was conducted by the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling, states that college students have far more free time and disposable income than most people, according to the Florida Sun Sentinel. When broadband internet is thrown into the mix, students may have a difficult time saying no to online gambling.

Consequently, researchers said that college students are more than twice as likely as the general population to develop a gambling addiction, according to the news source. The report quotes a representative from a local chapter of Gamblers Annonymous, who states that his organization is being contacted at least once per week from college-age men who are seeking help with an addiction to online gambling.

Earlier this year, Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts introduced legislation that place greater regulation on the online gambling industry in an effort to curb this kind of dangerous addiction, according to the Washington Post.
