Holiday celebrations may lead to addiction and injury
By Staff Writer
For many people, the holidays are a time to celebrate and enjoy time with family. However, some take this partying too far, which may result in a higher rate of substance abuse and drug-related accidents.
Officials from the American College of Emergency Room Physicians recently issued a warning that individuals should take extra precautions during the holiday season to ensure that their revelry doesn't result in injuries or deaths.
The organization cited statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which show that 79,000 deaths occur each as a direct result of excessive alcohol consumption.
Many of these deaths are a result of drunk driving, but emergency rooms also see many life-threatening injuries during the holiday season that result from inebriated individuals climbing ladders or going out onto roofs to decorate their houses.
The organization's president added that, over the years, this type of excessive consumption may also result in serious physical and neurological damage as well as increase the risk of addiction. She cautioned individuals to celebrate responsibly this holiday season.
