California Senate Approves Food Stamps for Drug Felons

The California Senate has approved a bill that would allow some drug felons to receive food stamps, the Los Angeles Times reported Aug. 26.

Currently, drug felons are prohibited from receiving food stamps under legislation passed during a 1997 overhaul of the state's welfare system. California residents convicted of possessing, manufacturing, or selling drugs were prohibited for life from receiving food stamps.

"I don't think the idea to put in place this lifetime ban was out of mean-spiritedness," said Assemblyman Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), author of the legislation. "The fear was you could trade food stamps for drugs. But today, with electronic debit cards for food stamps, the problem goes away."
